Lehman’s was our second stop on our trip to Ohio’s Amish country. Lehman’s calls itself a hardware store but it is so much more than that. You can find products for the whole house here. There’s a little something for everyone and you can easily spend an hour or two perusing their huge selection. The store stretches for nearly a quarter mile with 35,000 square feet of shopping.

Lehman Hardware Store in Kidron Ohio was founded in 1955 by Jay Lehman and is still to this day owned and operated by the Lehman family. As the World’s largest supplier of non-electric goods, Lehman’s was originally intended to meet the needs of the surrounding Amish community who wanted to maintain their simple way of life in an increasingly modern world.
Nowadays, you see more tourists in the Lehman’s Kidron store – although we did see a couple of Amish there too. Lehman’s has a smaller store in Mt. Hope that allows the Amish to shop in peace without all the gawking tourists around.
Our visit to Lehman Hardware Store in Kidron Ohio
We got to Lehman’s at about 9:30 in the morning and already it was pretty packed. You feel as if you are stepping back in time as you step through the doors. Everything about the place seems to recall a simpler time – from the products I didn’t know were being made anymore to the antique decorations spread throughout.
I wasn’t kidding when I said this store has a little bit of everything. In fact products that I would typically expect to find in a hardware store makes up very little of the store’s massive selection of products.
I particularly enjoyed the kitchenware section. They had a huge selection of cookware, food prep necessities, and food preservation supplies that caught my attention. I could have stayed there quite awhile browsing if the rest of the family hadn’t encouraged me to keep moving 🙂
We found items for sale that you would have thought only existed anymore in museums – like the huge wooden cabbage slicer for making sauerkraut and an old time butter churn.
Lehman’s didn’t forget about children – they have a big section of wooden toys, games, and children’s books. Toys that used to be popular when I was a kid can still be found at Lehman Hardware store in Kidron Ohio. I took a stroll down memory lane as I enjoyed seeing toys and games I thought were long gone, like jacks, yo-yo’s, Lincoln Logs, Colorforms, and the game Tiddly Winks. Remember any of those from your childhood?
