Located right in the heart of Ohio Amish Country, Heini Cheese Chalet in Millersburg Ohio is a cheese lover’s paradise. With over 70 different cheeses to sample and the opportunity to watch the cheese being made, this Amish country cheese factory is a must-see!
I am a huge fan of Heini’s yogurt cheese, so I knew I wanted to visit the Heini cheese factory on our recent trip to Ohio Amish country. We came prepared with a cooler full of ice to ensure all that cheesy goodness would stay cold on the way back home.
There are tons of cheese shops in Ohio Amish country, but Heini Cheese Chalet in Millerburg Ohio is my favorite. Between being able to watch cheese being made and the sheer volume of cheese samples you can try, we always plan a visit to Heini’s whenever we are in the area.

Heini’s delicious cheese is made with milk from local Amish farms. Their cheese is from mostly grass fed cows. (However in the winter they are fed grain when snow is covering the grass.)
One of the highlights of visiting this Ohio Amish country cheese factory is the ability to sample over 70 different varieties of cheese. They have your standard Swiss and cheddar, but they also have more unusual cheeses like Bermuda Onion (a personal fave of mine), yogurt-cultured cheese, and ghost pepper cheese (not for the faint of heart).
When you enter the Heini Cheese Factory retail store, you will probably see a long line near the cheese mural. If you want to sample the cheese (and who wouldn’t?), take your place at the end of the line. The Heini cheese factory in Berlin Ohio is a popular destination in Ohio Amish country, so be prepared for waiting in line a bit to sample the cheeses. The line generally moves quickly though. We stood in line about 15 minutes before we got to the sampling area.
The sampling area at this Amish country cheese factory is made up of 2 long aisles with coolers to either side. The cheese samples will be on your left. The coolers on the right have other foods available for purchase. Located throughout the sampling area are containers of toothpicks and trash receptacles.
Cheese sampling etiquette: Use the toothpick to grab a cheese cube and then use your hand to pop the cheese cube off of the toothpick and into your mouth. That way you can continue to use the same toothpick through the entire line. If you pop the toothpick in your mouth, you need to get a new one before you get another sample.
I ended up buying 8 different varieties of cheese – including 2 different flavors of cream cheese fudge 🙂 It’s a good thing cheese will last for a long time in the refrigerator because it’s going to take us awhile to get through it all!
Don’t want to wait in line? Visit the coolers in the gift shop to pick up some of the most popular varieties of cheeses without having to wait in the sample line.

The cheese sampling line goes right by the History of Cheese Making mural. The mural was painted by local artist Tom Miller in 1970. It is made up of 2 large panels depicting various scenes showing how cheese making has evolved over time. While you are at Heini’s you can pick up a brochure explaining all the images in the mural. It’s really quite impressive to see in person.
