We went on a camping trip to celebrate my youngest daughter’s 13th birthday.  Since it was her trip, she got to decide on the menu for all the meals.  For breakfast, she wanted monkey bread.  I have made monkey bread many times in the oven, but wasn’t so sure how it would turn out over a campfire.

To my surprise, it turned out perfectly in our cast iron Dutch oven.  You nestle the Dutch oven down in the campfire and place hot coals on the lid.  Because the Dutch oven traps the heat, it cooks just like if it were in a regular oven.

Equipment Needed for Making Monkey Bread over the Campfire

  • 12 inch cast iron Dutch oven
  • 24 charcoal briquettes

Camping Monkey Bread Recipe Prep Work

Whenever we go camping, I like to do a lot of the prep work at home.  I don’t want to waste valuable camping time cutting or mixing when that could be done ahead of time.  So our camping cooler is filled with a lot of meals that have been partially prepped to save time.

Here are the steps for this campfire monkey bread recipe that I do at home the day before our camping trip…

Cut up biscuits in advance for this camping monkey bread recipe. This Dutch oven monkey bread recipe is made over the campfire and is perfect for lazy mornings.  You can do a lot of the prep at home for a delicious camping breakfast without a lot of fuss.

Open the cans of biscuits and separate.  Use a pair of kitchen shears to cut each individual biscuit in quarters.  Place in a zip close gallon sized storage bag.  Store in a cooler until you are ready to make this camping monkey bread recipe.

In a small resealable container, combine the sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon.   Shake to mix well.  I like to use wide mouth mason jars with plastic storage caps to store dry ingredients while we are camping.  These lids are reusable and screw tightly to close.

Finely chop the walnuts using a hand crank nut chopper or food processor.  Store in another resealable container.

To start this Dutch oven monkey bread recipe, you need to make a fire. Place 24 charcoal briquettes in the fire ring and light.  While you are waiting for the fire to die down, proceed with adding your monkey bread ingredients to the Dutch oven.

✅ TIP: Line the Dutch oven with foil for easy cleanup.

Take a little bit of butter and rub it all over the inside of the Dutch oven (or over the foil if you are using it to line your cast iron).

Open the plastic bag that has the biscuit pieces and pour the cinnamon / sugar mixture over top.  Zip the bag closed and shake to ensure that the sugar mixture coats all the biscuit pieces.  Dump the biscuits into the Dutch oven, arranging the pieces evenly.

Sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the top of the biscuits.  Melt the stick of butter and pour over the top of the biscuits.  Put the lid on top of the Dutch oven.

When the fire has died down but the briquettes are still glowing, it is ready to bake this campfire monkey bread recipe.  Using long BBQ tongs,  rearrange the charcoal briquettes so there are 9 in the middle of the fire ring.  Move the rest aside.

Set the filled Dutch oven on those 9 briquettes.  Use BBQ tongs to place the remaining charcoal briquettes on the top of the Dutch oven lid.

Allow this camping monkey bread recipe to cook for 25-30 minutes.  When it is finished, the monkey bread will be golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside.

I keep telling the kids we’re going to camp out on the back garden over the summer, so we’ll have to have a go at making this campfire monkey bread. Anything to make their experience that little more realistic is great, and I’m sure this tastes delicious too 🙂
